2019 Santa Fe… Insurance is killing me

Progressive raised my rates again. I’ve got a 2019 SEL and now I’m paying almost $1,200 for 6 months of insurance. My driving record is spotless—no tickets, no accidents for over a decade. Meanwhile, my wife drives a 2019 Escape Titanium and pays under $700 for the same coverage.

The problem? The base SE model had a regular key, and insurance companies lump ALL trims together because of the ‘Kia Boyz’ theft issue. Never mind that my SEL has a smart key and isn’t at risk. I already switched from USAA to Progressive two years ago because of this, but it’s the same story.

I actually like my car. Just put new tires on it and planned to keep it for a few more years. But at this rate, ditching it for a new Outback or Passport could make sense—the insurance drop alone would almost cover the higher car payment.

Thanks for the cheap ignition keys, Hyundai! :roll_eyes:

Have you checked with other insurance providers?

I’m calling around, but I already switched once for this same issue two years ago.

Might be worth talking to an insurance broker. They can shop around for the best deal, and not all brokers work with the same companies, so maybe try a couple.

Maybe ask if installing an aftermarket alarm, like a Viper system, would help lower your rate?

Did Hyundai offer a software update for your model, and if so, was it applied? Might be worth checking if that would change anything with Progressive.

Also, Hyundai partnered with AAA to offer insurance discounts for affected models in most states. You could try getting a quote at AAA.com/insurance. Hope that helps!

@Lennon
There’s no software update for mine. My trim already has a smart key and was never at risk for theft. The problem is insurance companies don’t care—they just see ‘2019 Santa Fe’ and assume it’s a high-theft model.

@Rowan
That’s frustrating. I didn’t realize they lump all the trims together like that. Definitely seems unfair.

Yeah, it’s ridiculous. I’m paying for a problem that doesn’t even apply to my car.
