Do you have any recommendations for someone with severe asthma and allergies considering a move to Santa Fe?

We’re exploring options around the U.S. for a place to live with minimal vegetation, possibly in a desert or high-altitude area. New Mexico seems like a potential fit, so we’re reaching out to residents for advice. We’re also asking about Albuquerque, but pollution is a concern. Any suggestions would be appreciated. EDIT: I’m starting to get a clearer picture! Are there any small towns nearby that might be more suitable? Is the area more desert-like, densely vegetated, or manageable for allergies?

Haha, allergies here can be really severe.

Despite what many people think, New Mexico has a lot of vegetation and a relatively high pollen count. Juniper and chamisa are major allergens in Santa Fe. If you haven’t been exposed to high desert plants before, your allergies might be worse in the first few years.

When I lived near Santa Fe, about an hour and a half away in the Taos area, I had the worst allergies of my life throughout the entire year.

You’re seeking areas with a lot of concrete, such as large, heavily developed cities. While deserts do have many plants, they tend to be drought-resistant. You might also be aware of something called “dust,” which is prevalent here.

This is the first time in my life that I’ve lived in a place where I have allergies.
