I have a 2023 Santa Fe, and my average MPG is around 29. I’ve had the car for about two years.
Recently, I noticed my friend’s Honda Civic has an average MPG of only 20. We both have similar commutes, around 12 minutes with some stop-and-go. I’ve taken a few longer road trips on the highway, so that might help my MPG, but I was surprised to see her Civic’s number so low since I thought Civics were known for good fuel efficiency. I also thought Hyundai’s MPG was generally lower.
Is it just me, or could something be off with her car?
It’s probably down to driving style. Plus, Civics vary widely in performance and engine options. Some models are over 300 hp, so a Civic’s MPG can vary a lot. Saying Hyundai is bad and Civic is good on MPG doesn’t apply across the board with so many different factors involved.

Exactly, like Moose said, driving style makes a huge difference. For example, Santa Fe owners report a wide MPG range—anywhere from 17 mpg (for those heavy on the gas) up to 40+ mpg with hybrids and careful drivers. Sounds like your friend might have a heavy foot or drive in a way that keeps her MPG low.
I drive a 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan and still get around 21 mpg. If her Civic’s getting 20, it’s likely either her driving habits or something wrong with the car.
