Hello everyone,
I’m planning a trip to Santa Fe, and spring is likely the best time for me. However, being from California, I have no experience driving in snow.
I know it does snow there, so what’s the earliest time of year we could visit without worrying about snow or ice on the roads? I realize this might be a silly question, and maybe the roads and highways are cleared quickly, but I’m just unsure and want to avoid an unsafe driving situation.
I heard this year was going to be an El Niño winter, it’s hard to guess. Since I’ve been here it’s different every year, I would bank on there being some snow in the mountains but not in town.
Snow can happen here as late as May, and I’ve even heard of it in June from locals. The roads usually clear up quickly as long as the sun’s out. Try taking a drive this winter through a snowy part of California to gain some experience—just in case you encounter snow during your visit here!
Spring here is quite unpredictable, and I’ve seen heavy snowfall in March. The good news is that it tends to melt fairly quickly, so driving usually isn’t a major issue. However, as I mentioned, spring weather is incredibly unpredictable and can vary a lot.
