I applaud Neal Turnquist for warning Santa Feans about this group’s inappropriate presence in our city. Alongside MFL, the far-right MAGA organizations such as Partners for Ethical Care and the New Mexico Freedoms Alliance are notably anti-trans. Turnquist remarks, “The history of hatred and vilification against the LGBTQ+ community is closely tied to the rise of authoritarian governance and the suppression of citizens’ rights. Such an event is inappropriate for Santa Fe.”
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 12 at 5:00 pm at La Fonda on the Plaza in the NM room.
Check out the event organizer, Partners for Ethical Care, along with seven other organizations. Tickets are priced at $25 for general admission, $100 for VIP, and $500 for sponsorship. These speakers earn hundreds of thousands of dollars annually from speaking fees.
La Fonda should never host such a meeting. The place has really declined over the past 12 years, especially since the major renovations to the rooms and restaurant. I used to love going there, but now it feels like a disappointment.
We went to Plazuela for a company Christmas dinner party (not on Christmas) with six people. As a local company with all local employees, we were treated very rudely. Despite ordering drinks, appetizers, main courses, and dessert, we were asked to leave within an hour to make space for other guests. Fine, but this will definitely affect our choice for future Christmas dinners.
This is entirely expected, considering how many of Santa Fe’s homes are second properties owned by Texans. Without more housing construction in Santa Fe, the problem will only worsen.
This situation mirrors how Texans blame Californians for shifting Texas politics, when in reality, many recent movers from California to Texas are conservative individuals escaping what they view as a Venezuelan-like dystopia.
I’ve seen two posts supporting these extremists—one from a supposed professor and native New Mexican, and another from someone with long-term ties to LANL or Sandia.
My wife and I recently drove from Texas to explore housing options. We’re looking to escape the Moms for Liberty-type groups, as well as the weather and pollen. If there’s a protest, we’d like to join. These groups can be challenged effectively; we managed to defeat similar factions in our Austin-area suburb. However, state-level politics remain a different challenge, and we’re weary of being the “blueberry in the tomato soup.”
