My house has lost power for the fifth or sixth time this year, and I’m curious why it’s been happening so often this summer. Two outages were weather-related, but most of them happened when there weren’t any storms.
This year has been completely different. I’ve experienced only one or two outages in the past two years, but since early August, there have been six or seven—something I’ve never seen before. I called PNM, and at first, they acted clueless. One agent seemed so concerned about the weekly outages that she put me on hold for a long time and then returned with some vague explanation about “switching,” sounding just as unsure as I felt.
PNM is currently pushing a monopolistic, predatory 20% rate hike that will really hurt people. We all know New Mexico is a joke in almost every category except food, culture, and outdoor activities, but PNM has had every advantage in Santa Fe for decades. Instead of a solid reason like “infrastructure,” I believe these outages are a tactic to gain support for this outrageous rate increase. Let’s not forget how they got caught lying about “dangers” at Fort Marcy earlier this year when they wanted to cut down trees but backed off when public outrage made them uncomfortable. Sleaze will always be sleaze.
It makes me think about what power outages will be like this winter.
My power went out as well, about 20 minutes ago. It’s unusual, and I wish I knew what was happening. At least it’s reassuring to know it wasn’t just my house.
This year feels overwhelming compared to the last three or four years, and it reminds me of when I was a teenager and a kid. About 10 to 15 years ago, experiencing this many power outages was much more common.
In fact, I’d say we had even more outages back then. I suspect they made some minor fixes to the infrastructure at that time, which are now aging and weakening.
I haven’t experienced any power outages… (knock on wood). I’m on the south side.
