So I’m having problems with the line-of-sight reader on my 2024 Calligraphy when the cruise control is on. It doesn’t always seem to pick up where I’m looking, even though I’m watching the road. I’ve adjusted the steering column, wheel, and everything, but I keep getting a warning to ‘watch the road’ (I am!) and the system sometimes just shuts off the cruise control, even braking the car on the highway. I reached out to Hyundai, and it seems like there isn’t a ‘fix’ yet.

Not sunglasses, just regular glasses. I’m pretty tall, but I’ve set everything up to keep a clear line to the sensor. Drove about 8 miles to work the other day, and it chimed around 25 times and gave the harsh warning 8 times, so it’s basically making cruise unusable. There was some sun glare too—wondering if there’s a way to block that from the sensor.

Wait, so does it not work with sunglasses at all? I have a retina issue and need prescription sunglasses, and I’ve never had trouble with my wife’s 2024 Toyota Highlander… would it be a problem with the Hyundai?
@Marin
Totally get it! The manual does say it might not work with polarized lenses. Maybe it depends on other factors too, but I’m just going by what the manual says.

Make sure your steering wheel has a clear line between your face and the sensor on the column. And keep your hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel.
Exactly! It’s often just the hand position that messes with it.

Yep, hands are at 10 and 2, and I’ve adjusted the column too. It doesn’t happen every trip, but it’s often enough to be a pain. Hyundai told me it’s a known issue with no fix yet, and it’s even mentioned in the manual. I really hope they figure it out soon because for a car this pricey, it needs a solution. Thanks, everyone!
@Tarian
Mind if I throw a few ideas out there? Just to troubleshoot a bit.
Would it be possible to do a quick test drive without your glasses (maybe with someone else driving if needed) to see if they might be interfering? Or maybe have someone who doesn’t wear glasses test it out?
And just wondering—do your glasses have prism correction? It can sometimes shift light vertically, which might confuse the sensor. Lastly, you could try recording with your phone’s camera in the dark to see if the IR lights are working properly; you might notice a blinking light near the sensor. Hope some of this helps!
Honestly, it sounds like something’s wrong with your system. Ours has been great—no false warnings or anything, and I’m tall too. Could you have a few other people drive it to see if it happens with them as well? If you can prove it’s happening consistently, it should be covered under warranty.
I had it go off once randomly yesterday. I usually wear sunglasses and look around without any warnings, but yesterday, I looked down at the radio, and it went off! Weird—it’s fine when I look out the side windows, but not at the radio, apparently.
Had a similar issue, and they tried replacing the camera at first, but that didn’t fix it. Eventually, they replaced the control module, and it’s been perfect ever since.
We run into this issue when there’s direct sunlight on the face reader. They really should’ve designed some kind of shield for it. And yeah, my husband can’t wear his sunglasses with cruise on, either.
Thanks for this info! My husband also wears glasses, and he’s had the issue occasionally too, but nothing like what I’ve experienced. My glasses are progressive and turn into sunglasses in the sun, but not inside the car because of the UV-protected windows. I also have a coating for glare reduction, which I hadn’t thought about. I’ll try to test the IR light and see if it shows up on my phone.
I’ve been driving with this for over 10k miles, and it really enhances autopilot. Check it out, though I think 2024 and 2025 models aren’t supported yet. Should be soon!
