Shifter System Malfunction... Anyone Else Dealt With This?

Hey everyone, I got this error message last week after starting the car and selecting Reverse. It’s a 2023 Calligraphy FWD with only 4,053 miles on it. The car is just 14 months old.

I switched it back to Park and turned off the car. After waiting a minute, I started it again, and everything was fine. It hasn’t happened again, but I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this. Did it get worse or happen again for you? I’d rather not take it to the dealer and get told they couldn’t duplicate the issue. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Is your car part of any recalls? I’d check and make sure just in case.

Thanks for the suggestion! I checked the My Hyundai app, and it says there are no recalls for my vehicle. I also ran my VIN on Hyundai’s site, and there were no recalls listed. But it’s a good reminder, so I appreciate it!

Oh right, I forgot you have a 2023 model. The DCT tranny recall wouldn’t apply to your car. Still, I’d take it to the dealer so they can pull the codes and see what’s going on. It looks like something triggered a fault, and hopefully, it’s nothing serious, but if it is, it’s better to catch it early.

My 2024 Santa Fe hybrid has had the same issue. It’s been in the shop six times already. Sometimes when I put it in reverse, it just won’t come out of it. It’s a huge safety concern. I’ve got under 4,000 miles on it, and it’s also been putting itself in parking brake mode in car washes or when there’s too much noise nearby, like a loud radio. The dealership can’t recreate the problem, but it’s happened a few times in the middle of the road and at a car wash, where they even had to shut it down. I’ve spent more time at the dealer than in my own car!

@Jonah
That sounds awful! Did you get the same shift error message I did, by any chance?

No, my warning light is different. My car uses the BlueLink system to notify Hyundai, but they haven’t fixed the issue on my end. It’s still malfunctioning, and the system just keeps failing.

I had this happen once on my 2025 hybrid. I stopped at a parking spot, turned off the car without putting it in Park, and when I started it again, I got the same error and couldn’t shift. I turned the car off and on again, and the issue disappeared. I tried to make it happen again but couldn’t. I took it to the dealer, and they didn’t find any codes. They said it might happen if you don’t put the car in Park before turning it off, but I don’t really believe that. To me, it feels like a minor software glitch that happened because I turned off the car in a specific sequence. Since I can’t recreate the issue, I’m just ignoring it for now.
