Anyone here trying to get a real Defender vibe going? I’m looking to add a full-size spare to my 2025 Hybrid Calligraphy, but I’m limited on options since it’s a hybrid. Under-the-vehicle mounting seems possible, but if not, I’d need to lower the third row and leave the tire in the car.
Here are some of my questions:
Could the trunk motor handle the weight of a full-size spare and cover?
Has anyone tried a full-size spare mod in the trunk? Or know a retailer or custom shop in the U.S. that could handle this kind of project?
Am I just dreaming, or is this something worth pursuing?
Have you thought about a hitch-mounted rack? Some of those fold down so you can still access the liftgate without body modifications. You could even adjust the mount closer to the car to get that look you’re going for.
@Asa
Thanks, just started looking up those options. Only concern is where it would actually mount since I don’t want to mess with all the cameras back there. I’ll keep researching, though. Appreciate you thinking outside the box.
@Reese
Maybe try a roof mount? I found that there are two unused mounting points inside the body on the rear sides, but you’d need to drill. That would allow you to attach a ‘box’ or something similar on the sides.
You’d need to remove the interior trim to reach the metal brackets, though. You might find more details on the service documents at hyundaitechinfo.com (paid access).
The hatch won’t support that weight—not even just the motor—it just wouldn’t open. If you’re set on a Defender look, maybe try just mounting a spare tire cover?

Appreciate it. Any suggestions on where to start with mounting a spare tire cover? First new car here, trying not to go overboard, but I had a rough trip last winter and want to be better prepared.
@Reese
If it’s really about being prepared, just add a spare under the car where the factory spare would be. From your post, it sounded like you were mainly going for the look.
Why do you say options are limited under the vehicle? It’s designed to hold a spare tire under there. You can find a spare tire hoist for around $100. My ‘24 SEL already has the mounting holes in place, just no hoist.

I thought that wasn’t an option with the hybrid?
I have a hybrid, and mine has the mounting holes labeled for a spare. I’d probably take measurements before buying a hoist, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
I know it’s just a concept, but it shows it could be done. I’ve also heard that putting stuff in the way of the rear sensors can disable some features.
